Project description and responsibilities: We seek a graduate research assistant (MS student) in wildlife ecology to study the contributions of trace mineral elements and space use on elk survival in Nevada. The research project seeks to understand potential causes of puzzling springtime mortality of elk in northern Nevada that may contribute to population declines. In collaboration with staff at the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW), the student will evaluate whether spring mortality is driven by trace mineral deficiencies, novel diseases, space use, and/or landscape-scale factors. The student will be based out of the Nevada Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit (NVCFWRU) at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) and will have opportunity to pursue their MS degree through the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences or the Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology programs. The student will be advised by Dr. Brian Folt at the NVCFWRU at UNR and will be expected to take classes, assist with field work, contribute to annual reports, write a MS thesis, publish at least one peer-reviewed journal article, give presentations to cooperators and at conferences, and enthusiastically participate in various academic communities at UNR, among other duties.
Qualifications: BS in ecology, wildlife biology, or related field. Strong candidates will be interested in population, disease, and/or landscape ecology and possess experience with field research, statistical analysis, and/or R programming. The ideal candidate is motivated, enthusiastic, creative, collaborative, and productive, with strong oral and written communication skills. MS Assistantship in Termite Methane Emissions at Utah State University

Our group is recruiting a MS student interested in studying termite methane emissions at Utah State University (www.zhoulabusu.weebly.com). This position focuses on studying termite methane emissions at the individual species level and exploring the variations in species-specific termite methane emissions in relation to termite gut microbiomes. Fieldwork will be conducted across tropical savannas and forests in the Republic of Congo. Position Description: The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) helps protect watersheds, enhance habitat and air quality, and conserve soils. However, with increasing large wildfires across many regions of the U.S., it is unclear how CRP lands might be mobilized to reduce wildfire risk and contribute to fire resilient landscapes. The Donovan lab is seeking a motivated PhD or MS student to assess of the role that CRP lands have played in historical wildfire risk and their potential to enhance or reduce wildfire risk in the future. Specifically, the student will generate models of wildfire risk and the relative contribution of CRP lands using remotely sensed information and test alternative future scenarios of wildfire risk based on climate and landscape configurations of CRP lands. The student will be expected to lead quantitative statistical analyses, present their findings at scientific conferences, complete relevant course work, and publish their findings in the peer-reviewed literature. Moreover, the student will be expected to collaborate with a team of students and scientists at the University of Florida and Texas State University.

A Ph.D. research assistantship is available as part of a research project on Climate Smart Forestry, starting in summer 2025, in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Conservation at Clemson University. This position is part of a grant-funded, three-year assistantship focused on advancing forest management practices for carbon sequestration as a Nature-based Climate Solution.
The research will involve a multi-stand manipulative forestry experiment in which improved forest management practices are applied to mature pine stands that would otherwise be harvested. Carbon fluxes will be measured using a network of tall, eddy covariance flux towers to quantify atmospheric carbon sequestration and assess the biophysical effects of altered stand structure. The work addresses key challenges in the measurement, monitoring, and verification (MMV) of carbon projects.
The assistantship includes a three-year tuition waiver and a stipend of $27,000 per year. The project provides opportunities to develop skills in forestry and micrometeorology, including forest carbon inventories, eddy covariance sensor deployment, and data analysis. The student will also collaborate with a team of scientists at Clemson University and contribute to the broader understanding of climate-smart forest management.
Minimum Qualifications: Masters (or equivalent) degree in biological sciences, environmental science, ecology, forestry, atmospheric science, engineering, or other related field. Experience programming in R, Python or MATLAB.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience working with eddy covariance data, including running EddyPro and gapfilling models. Experience conducting forest surveys.

The Hardy Lab at Auburn University (http://hardylab.skullisland.info) is recruiting graduate students (MS or PhD) interested in exploring the diversity of herbivorous insects and using comparative analyses to better understand invasion biology. The work addresses general questions about the evolution of where species occur and aims to promote more sustainable agriculture and natural resource conservation. The Farine Lab at The Australian National University is seeking a PhD candidate to work on the movement ecology of keystone Australian pollinators: large honeyeaters.
The project will involve deploying state-of-the-art GPS trackers to noisy friarbirds Philemon corniculatus to develop a better understanding of their role in maintaining functional connectivity within Australian landscapes. Prior work using genetic methods determined that nearly half of pollination events in larger trees and shrubs can come from plants >5 kms away, suggesting an important role of larger birds that can traverse habitat gaps. This project will use noisy friarbirds as a model species to identify what habitat and environmental features are important for honeyeater movements. The project will combine GPS tracking to collect data on where and how honeyeaters move with more traditional research methods (e.g. surveys) to collect data on on-the-ground conditions (e.g. tree flowering state). This research benefits from close collaborations with Greening Australia, who have been undertaking revegetation projects in the study landscapes for over 20 years, and by collaborating with the Fenner School of the Environment and Society who have world-class environmental data available for the region.
The student will be fully integrated into the Farine Lab, who are an interdisciplinary group of researchers working across the interface of social behaviour, movement, and the environment. The lab is part of the Division of Ecology and Evolution within the Research School of Biology of the ANU. We chose to work at ANU because of its supportive and collegiate working environment.
The project will be supervised by Assoc. Prof. Damien Farine, Dr. James Klarevas-Irby (postdoc in the Farine lab), Prof. Saul Cunningham (ANU Fenner School of the Environment and Society), and Dr. Nicky Taws (Greening Australia).
This position is fully funded by a Discovery Project grant awarded to Assoc. Prof. Damien Farine. Commencement and duration
The student will ideally start in mid-2025, allowing time to complete the initial milestones prior to starting field work (September 2025 onwards). The standard PhD project at ANU is funded for 3.5 years with an optional additional industry internship for up to 6 months.

Description: The Walters Lab at the University of Wyoming Cooperative Fish & Wildlife Research Unit is seeking applications for a funded master’s student (stipend of $2000/month plus benefits & tuition waiver). The student will be responsible for leading a research project to evaluate the current population status of Plains Sucker in northeast Wyoming. The study will use backpack electrofishing and stream habitat surveys to assess species distribution, local abundance, habitat preferences, and collect genetic samples.
The successful candidate will oversee study design, field technician hiring and supervision, data management and analysis, and preparation of manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication. Genetic analyses will occur in collaboration with Elizabeth Mandeville’s lab at Northern Michigan University. The project is also in collaboration with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. The Walters Lab is committed to increasing the representation of traditionally excluded groups and fostering a diverse, equitable and inclusive research lab at the University of Wyoming.

MS Assistantship in Termite Methane Emissions at Utah State University
Position Description
Our group is recruiting a MS student interested in studying termite methane emissions at Utah State University (www.zhoulabusu.weebly.com). This position focuses on studying termite methane emissions at the individual species level and exploring the variations in species-specific termite methane emissions in relation to termite gut microbiomes. Fieldwork will be conducted across tropical savannas and forests in the Republic of Congo. The graduate student will have opportunities to collaborate with diverse groups of researchers at Harvard University, the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, and the Natural History Museum (London).
Preferred qualifications:
BS in biology, ecology, entomology or related fields;
Willingness to travel and conduct field research in remote locations;
Research experience in biogeochemistry and/or metagenomics and bioinformatics;
Training in statistical analysis using R or related software.

The Agricultural and Applied Economics Department in collaboration with Hufford and Nippgen Research Labs in the Ecosystem Science and Management Department invite applications for a student seeking to complete a Master of Science degree in agricultural economics with a focus on the economics of land reclamation and ecological restoration. The student will work with a team of researchers on an NSF-funded project to explore reclamation outcomes at sites in Wyoming affected by large surface mining disturbances.
The core research program will comprise:
Team members include Dr. Roger Coupal, (Agricultural Economics), Dr. Kristina Hufford (Ecology), and Dr. Fabian Nippgen (Hydrology). The successful applicant will receive a full graduate assistantship, which includes tuition and fees for up to 12 credit hours per semester, health insurance, and a monthly stipend. The student will have opportunities to work with state agency personnel and engineers who regulate and design land reclamation of disturbed lands. The student will be guided and supported by the full team to gain some depth and understand details of data collection from ecological field studies, remote sensing data results, and the modeling frameworks for stochastic cost effectiveness analysis. Research outcomes will predict how well different reclamation methods meet regulatory requirements and assess associated risks.
Preferred applicants should have a B.S. in a natural resource science or economics with an associated academic background in natural resource or biological sciences, or related work experience. Qualifications include a keen interest in environmental economics and reclamation, and ecological restoration practices. Familiarity or experience (at bachelor's level) in natural resource management and use of ecological or remote sensing information is also of interest . Quantitative skills will be taught but some background in analytical economic and statistical data analysis skills will be preferred. In addition to the MS degree, students will have the option of earning a graduate certificate in reclamation science, and experience in UAV flight planning.
